Plump, grumpy, slumped on the couch, and going nowhere fast at age 16, Phil Gaimon began riding a bicycle with the grand ambition of shedding a few pounds before going off to college. He soon fell into racing and discovered he was a natural, riding his way into a pro contract after just one season despite utter ignorance of a century of cycling etiquette. Now, in his book Pro Cycling on $10 a Day, Phil brings the full powers of his wit to tell his story.

Presented here as a guide - and a warning - to aspiring racers who dream of joining the professional racing circus, Phil's adventures in road rash serve as a hilarious and cautionary tale of frustrating team directors and broken promises. Phil's education in the ways of the peloton, his discouraging negotiations for a better contract, his endless miles crisscrossing America in pursuit of race wins, and his conviction that somewhere just around the corner lies the ticket to the big time fuel this tale of hope and ambition from one of cycling's best story-tellers.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day chronicles the racer's daily lot of blood-soaked bandages, sleazy motels, cheap food, and overflowing toilets. But it also celebrates the true beauty of the sport and the worth of the journey, proving in the end that even among the narrow ranks of world-class professional cycling, there will always be room for a hard-working outsider.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day From Fat Kid to Euro Pro (Audible Audio Edition) Phil Gaimon Sean Runnette Sportybooks Books

I read Phil's book in the reverse order - reading his 2nd book first and this one his first book second. The book is an interesting account of the cycling sport and his quest to make it to the pro ranks - along the way he gets a first hand look at the manipulation and broken promises that make the business side of cycling appear as a slapstick comedy routine. Through it all Phil keeps a positive outlook and finds happiness in the joy of riding his bike across the country and world. Phil has a sharp sense of humor - although his wit and dry sense of humor are nowhere on display in this book as they are in his 2nd book which had me chuckling out loud at times.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day From Fat Kid to Euro Pro (Audible Audio Edition) Phil Gaimon Sean Runnette Sportybooks Books Reviews

This book is another view of what it takes to make it into professional cycling. I feel that this is a very unfiltered look through a new generation of cyclist whose main goal was to make it through hard work, dedication, mistakes, love and passion.
Gaimon has a very interesting story about the trials of making it into the pro European peloton and the lack of glory associated with the majority of the work it takes to get there.
In a smaller way, this book addresses how the sport has changed from one dominated by doping to one of the idealistic bike racer. Gaimon readily acknowledges that there may still be "dirty" cyclist, but the list of clean cyclists, managers, and team sponsors is growing. Great, easy read for those who love to bike and those who are interested in a generation of cyclists we can hopefully be proud of.
The only reason I gave it four stars were the sometimes graphic locker room behavior recounted in the book. It is good to be honest about things that happen on the journey, but sometimes subtlety is advised. Would recommend, just not to my mom.
For some reason there has been a proliferation of "insider" books by current/former pro cyclists, but this is probably one of the more entertaining, and one likely actually written by the author. What's particularly nice about this one is that it is focused on the US pro cycling scene; others tend to be about US cyclists who have gone to Europe ("A Dog in a Hat" is particularly good). Plus, you can root for Phil as he has just started in European campaign with Garmin.

The book also is written from the "post-Lance" perspective, and for better or worse, the author's bitterness towards what that era has done to the sport (and towards Lance himself and others like Francisco Mancebo) comes out from time to time in the book. He also does little to hide the macho/boys-will-be-boys culture of cycling; it's not limited to cycling and he's to be credited for being honest, but some may be put off by it (as indicated in other reviews).

More than anything, this comes across as an honest book, and Phil's ability to make a cycling career and pursue other businesses to make ends meet is very interesting to follow. How well he'll do in Europe remains to be seen, but he has a career waiting for him once he is fiinished.

If you are into cycling (or have enjoyed Phil's columns in Velonews), this is a good book to read. It may not be as informative or as well written as Lance Armstrong's War or The Secret Race, but it is worth the read.
If nothing else, this is a story of hard work and perseverance...and how they may or may not pay off. Despite his bumps and bruises along the way, I think this funny, lighthearted narrative inspires one to "follow your dreams" and laugh it off whenever you can. Here is a passage from the book that provides a peek into his perspective on life (which I think is advanced for his age), humor, and ability to offer some truly useful advice

“A big goal like starting a business or writing a book can be daunting at first, but all you need to do is break it up into little pieces and keep working at it. You could eat a school bus if you ground it up and sprinkled it on your oatmeal every morning. Juggling it all was stressful at first, but it was also satisfying to get things done. Everyone is always searching for happiness, but satisfaction is almost as good—and much easier to achieve.”

I also like his "gloves off" approach the Lance Armstrong's giant lie, clarifying in graphic terms why Lance will never have the balls that someone like Besty Andreu does. (Sorry, Besty.)
If you're thinking about racing bikes in the USA, this is required reading. Having already raced and retired, it was like I was looking in a mirror. Phil didn't use a ghost writer - he is a great writer in addition to being a pretty fast bike racer. The book is honest, funny and true. You see the struggles and you appreciate the work he put in to get his big break. It was such a fast read, not because it was simple and shallow, but because it was so good.

There are plenty of books out there right now; tell-alls from those Lance-era riders who earned millions of money by cheating with drugs. Don't give them any more money - if you must read those, take them out of a library. Buy Phil's book because he drained his savings to get where he is, and although he has a great team now, bike racing is always an unstable future. So if you're only going to buy one pro-cycling tell-all, buy this one and support a clean rider who deserves what he gets from this effort.
“Pro Cycling on $10 a day” covers Gaimon’s progression from fat guy on a couch to pro cyclist. The writing style is humorous and often sarcastic, which makes it an extremely enjoyable read. If you’re like me and love cycling as a sport, whether you are a weekend group rider or have dabbled in the amateur racing scene, you will like this book, and may even learn something useful. I particularly enjoyed his descriptions of team tactics and how a skinny guy should race a crit!

This book is a breath of fresh air for a sport that has struggled with its image over the past 10 years, written by a guy who found the sport late and made it to the pro ranks by hard work and sacrifice. Having met and ridden with Gaimon at some local events in the LA area, I have to say this guy is the real deal and a great ambassador for the sport.
